Periodontal Treatment (Gum Care)
Periodontal Treatment (Gum Care)
Gum disease often occurs when there is a plaque buildup (a sticky form of bacteria that forms on the teeth). If the plaque is not removed (by flossing, brushing, and regular dental checkups), it will continue to build up and create bacterias that can damage the gums.
Two Stages of Gum Disease:
Gingivitis
In an early stage of gum disease, the gums often become red and swollen and bleed quite easily. At this stage, the condition is still treatable and can heal by daily brushing and flossing.
Periodontitis
If left untreated, gingivitis will advance into periodontitis. The gums and bones that support the teeth will become seriously and irreversibly damaged. Gums infected with periodontitis can cause teeth to become loose or fall out. Alternatively, a dentist can remove the teeth.
Treatment For Periodontitis:
Periodontitis treatment aims to thoroughly clean the pockets around teeth and prevent damage to the surrounding bone. You have the best chance for successful treatment when you adopt a daily routine of good oral care and manage health conditions that may impact dental health. In most cases, a periodontist, dentist, or dental hygienist will perform these treatments.
