Space
When a baby tooth is lost early, neighbouring teeth drift into the space. A small custom appliance holds the gap so the permanent tooth has somewhere to come in.
About
Space Maintainers
Premature loss of a baby tooth — from trauma, decay, or a planned extraction — creates a gap that the surrounding teeth drift into. A space maintainer is a small wire-and-band appliance that holds that space until the permanent successor erupts.
We design every space maintainer to your child's specific case. Most are fixed (cemented to the neighbouring tooth) and stay in for 1 to 4 years, depending on how much eruption time is left.
Adjustment visits are short and infrequent. We re-evaluate at every regular check-up and remove the appliance once the underlying permanent tooth begins to erupt.
Skipping a needed space maintainer typically means orthodontic treatment later to recover the lost space — a far more expensive and lengthy intervention.

Space Maintainers · FAQ
Common questions about space maintainers at Stadium Dental in Edmonton.
Most kids forget about a fixed space maintainer within a few days. Removable versions take a little longer to get used to but are well-tolerated by school-age kids.
When the permanent tooth begins to erupt, we cut the band off the anchor tooth in a 5-minute visit. No anaesthetic needed.
