About

TMJ Treatment

Most TMJ pain doesn't need surgery. A combination of a custom-fitted bite-stabilization appliance, targeted physiotherapy, and a few habit changes resolves the majority of cases within 8 to 12 weeks.

We start with a thorough exam: bite analysis, joint loading tests, jaw range-of-motion measurements, and a discussion of clenching, grinding, posture, and stress triggers. A targeted set of next steps is agreed on before any appliance is made.

A custom bite-stabilization splint is the most common first treatment. Worn at night (and sometimes during the day for a few weeks), it gently de-loads the joint and lets the muscles relax.

If pain doesn't resolve, we co-manage with a TMJ-trained physiotherapist and, in stubborn cases, an oral surgeon. Stadium Dental coordinates the full pathway and direct-bills your insurance.

TMJ Treatment · FAQ

Common questions about tmj treatment at Stadium Dental in Edmonton.

  1. Almost never. Surgical management of the TMJ is reserved for the small percentage of cases that don't respond to conservative therapy and meet very specific imaging and pain criteria.

  2. Often yes. Tension headaches that originate in the muscles of the temples and behind the eyes are commonly caused by clenching, and they resolve as the muscles unwind.
